How to Choose your Folding Knife? A guide to Opinel sizes

What Size Opinel Should I Choose? Understanding Opinel Sizes

A Size for Every Job: Choosing Your Opinel Pocket Knife

The Opinel pocket knife is an iconic tool, loved in France and around the world. While the classic No.08 is the most famous, Opinel offers a range of sizes, from tiny keychain knives to large collectible items.

This variety dates back to the early days of Opinel. By 1897, just seven years after founding his business, Joseph Opinel had developed 12 different sizes, numbered from 1 to 12. The smallest, No.01, came with a ring to attach to a pocket watch, while the largest, No.12, featured a 12-cm blade. Though the No.01 and No.11 were discontinued in the 1930s, today’s lineup still includes a wide range of sizes inspired by Opinel’s original collection.

Not sure which size is right for you? Here's how some of our customers use their favourite Opinel knives.

Opinel Size Guide

Small Utility Knives: No.02, No.03, No.04, No.05

While the tiny No.01 is no longer in production, Opinel still offers several small blades. The No.02, equipped with a keychain, is perfect for small tasks. One customer described it as “the biggest little knife you’ll ever need,” using it for everything from opening letters and boxes to sharpening pencils.

Don't let their size fool you—these small knives are just as sharp as their larger counterparts. Keep in mind that sizes 2 to 5 do not include Opinel's signature locking ring.

Everyday Carry: No.06, No.07, No.08

These are the versatile workhorses of the Opinel line, ideal for everyday carry. The No.08 is the most popular, but the No.07 and No.06 offer slightly smaller blades and handles, making them perfect for smaller hands or younger users. With a variety of wood handles and optional leather lanyards, there’s an Opinel for every preference.

One satisfied customer writes about the No.08: “This stainless steel beauty lives up to the hype. It's so light you won't even know you’re carrying it. Elegant, classic styling and a simple, beguiling mechanism. I loved it so much I gifted two more to friends.”

Work Knives: No.09, No.10, No.12

For a heftier option, look to the larger end of our folding knives. These are perfect for the toolbox or camp kit, whether you're trimming wood or preparing food. Strong yet lightweight, they offer an ideal blend of durability and portability.

One No.10 owner raves, “This knife is a must-have for anyone interested in the outdoors, DIY projects, or simply collecting knives. It's slightly too large for daily pocket carry, unless you're wearing an apron, tool belt, or carrying a pack. That said, it’s very comfortable to hold and use.”

The Giant: No.13

In the 1970s, Opinel decided to think big—really big. The result was the No.13, originally designed as a promotional item for shop windows. At nearly 20 inches long when fully open, the No.13 quickly became a hit. Today, it's still in production and available for retailers, collectors, and enthusiasts. Add this giant to your collection, and it’s sure to be a conversation starter.
